Bhanwari Devi, a ‘potter’ (kumhar) of Bhateri vi1lage, Rajasthan, is a rare human being- who firmly believes that everybodv has a god-gifted right to live with dignity and honour.
Undeterred by her own social and economic size, Bhanwari Devi became a ‘Sathin’ in 1986. In 1992, the campaign against child marriage was intensified. An influential family insisted on the marriage of their infant girl. Bhanwari Devi did her duty, campaigned against the marriage and her efforts frustrated the marriage plans.
She was punished for her bold stand. But she did now cower and picked up the gauntlet. She braved economic penury, social ostracism.
Bhanwari Devi is a Neerja Bhanot Awardee.
