Accept, Do Not Expect

by Deepak Chopra

When we expect something from somebody, we give away our power in the hands of the other person. He can then make us dance to his tune, to his whims and fancies. He can hold sway over our moods, our happiness, our very state of mind.

This means that our joys and sorrows are dependent on the actions of others, on results that precipitate from deeds of others.

Expectations arise from gratification to desired outcomes. The desired outcomes are a reflection of inherent greed and need and cravings of an individual’s personality.

Expectations suffocate the will of God and lead to disruption of Divine intervention.

By constricting the flow of Divine Grace we become myopic in our vision and lose the oppor-tunity to explore the unknown. Expectations limit one’s choices.

Non-fulfillment of expectations expose us to the unknown. It makes us go beyond our comfort zone. It helps us in discovering our real self, developing our latent strengths and hence let loose the Columbus in each of us to embark on an inward voyage to discover the unknown.

Expectations breed monotony and boredom. Acceptance is going with the flow of the Divine Grace. It is the path of least resistance. This thought does not in any way propagate inaction. Actions that are justified should be performed.

Acceptance in this context is synonymous to surrender before God’s will.

For example, you expend more energy going upstream or against the flow of the river (here the stream and river are analogous to our lives). Be like the air current, strong so that you can uproot and destroy any obstacles that come in your path or circumvent and negotiate the obstacles to reach your destination and achieve your goals.

These obstacles can emerge in the shape of fear, jealousy, vengeance, anger, hatred, pain, anguish and resentment.

Acceptance expands your horizons and expos-es you to new shores of life.

It keeps you in sync with nature and bestows you serenity and mental peace. Acceptance helps you to embrace uncertainty which is the most mystical moment in the realm of life.

Acceptance empowers you, since you remain unperturbed and blissful.
It is a communion with the Divine.
