Alone, Not Lonely

by Deepak Chopra

Fearful? Disheartened?

Unhappy? Being alone is none of these. Being alone means sans the notional crutches in our mind which we get so accustomed to and dependent upon. These can take the form of one’s kith and kin, near and dear ones. Some are part and parcel of life, others are self cultivated. Their existence and presence in our life breeds mutual expectations. It promotes dependency and can lead to haughtiness, giving rise to feel-ings of being indispensable which are contrary to the tenets of any relationship, since everything is transient in this world.

The only things that are constant are change and the presence of the Divine.

It is these crutches which tend to cripple us in life when they get frac-tured, which leads to loneliness. There is sudden vacuum in our mind and we are left floundering for sup-

port. But who erected them in our mind? We, ourselves. Who injected strength into them? Our attitude.

Our attachment. What caused the fracture? Breach of trust. Loss of faith.

Fear, anxiety and unhappiness rush in to displace the vacuum. You feel like a ship without any anchor, pitching and rolling in the sea. You are plunged into a well of darkness where your only companion is the outer silence trying to muffle the shrieks and screams within you, as you scramble and stumble, groping the unknown. A person can be lonely even in a crowd.

It is detachment from these crutch-es which act as a saviour.

Consider yourself to be an island, surrounded by sea of spirituality. Let only those dock on the shore who have been cleansed and puri-fied after being subjected to rigors of time and divinity.

So let us seek support of the Divine in whatever we do and wher-ever we go, for one is never alone, leave aside lonely, in His presence.
