Healthy choices when dealing with stress: Integrative Nutrition

It is very normal to experience a little stress. Our source of stress may vary from one person to another. Therefore, we have different ways of dealing with it. Stress may interfere with our eating choices. We may look for a big tub of popcorn or a chocolaty sweet dish which just adds to our calorie count, making us even more stressed out.
Instead of calorie rich foods, stock up on healthy foods to utilize the calming properties of herbal supplements, teas and nutrient rich foods.
Important nutrient and nutrient rich foods:
• Vitamin focus: B- vitamins are on the top of the list of stress relieving vitamins. Each B- vitamin has its own role in helping the body run smoothly. Followed by Vitamin C that helps lower the levels of cortisol, the stress hormone.

Eggs and dairy products- Milk and cheese

• Complex carbohydrates: Complex carbohydrates such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables can induce the brain to increase more serotonin, the calming brain chemical.

• Omega-3 Fatty acids : Nuts and Oilseeds such as flaxseeds, walnuts, almonds etc. are rich in Omega 3 fatty acids which have been found to reduce surges of stress hormones.
