Rotary Chandigarh Shivalik presents scholarships to visually challenged students

Chandigarh, February 19, 2020:  Rotary Chandigarh Shivalik (RCS) today presented the second and final instalment of scholarships worth Rs. 2,20,000 to eleven visually challenged college and university students at a function held at Sip ’n  Dine, Sector 7, Chandigarh. The first instalment had been given in November 2019. With this, scholarships worth Rs. 6,00,000 have been given to visually challenged students in the last 30 months by RCS.

The funds were raised through the unique  charity event – the ‘Thank You Rotary Dinner in the Dark’.   This is an exclusive, by-Invitation ONLY dinner at the Taj Chandigarh and  is Rotary’s way of saying ‘Thank You’ to people who financially contribute to the higher education of visually challenged persons. This is a once-in-a-lifetime  experience in which the guests are served a  three course dinner in pitch darkness by a team of visually impaired persons.  As  the guests realize they cannot even see their own hands in the pitch darkness, they  rediscover their other senses like touch, taste, smell etc. They also re-learn why it is more important to treasure God’s Gift – their eyes – than worry about which phone they have, which brand clothes they wear, which car they drive etc.  It gives a new perspective to life! Seven such dinners have already been held and the next ‘Thank You Rotary Dinner in the Dark’ is on March 15, 2020 at Taj Chandigarh. To get details on how to attend it, call  9815047017.

A jury had decided to confer the scholarships of Rs. 20,000 each to the eleven talented but economically weak visually impaired students: Sourab Southa (Late Col. Harsharan Sandhu Scholarship),  Manoj  Kumar (Late H S Malik Scholarship), Neeru (Late Sarabjit Singh Scholarship), Rizwan Ansari  (Late Col. Bimal Jain Scholarship),  Varun (Late Lt. Col. Ajeet Singh Judge Scholarship),  Nisha (Late Mrs. Bimla Devi Laroia Scholarship),  Tsering Chosphel (Late Col. Inderjeet Reen Scholarship), Harish Kumar Pandey  (Late Bimla Devi Scholarship), Sajan Singh (Late Dr. Surinder Singh and Dr. Gurdeep Kaur Scholarship),  Gurjot Singh (Harish and Rama Bhanot Scholarship)  and Rajat Batra (Neerja Bhanot Scholarship).

Visibly happy at the success of the Rotary Dinner in the Dark project, Rtn. Aneesh Bhanot, President, Rotary Chandigarh Shivalik said, “We have achieved our basic objectives : to ensure that ‘sighted’ people respect the blind by understanding how they smilingly face the problems they face in their daily lives and we were also  able to raise funds for providing scholarships.”

According to Rtn. LK Gupta, Secretary, RCS, “We wanted to spread the message of ‘Respect the Visually Impaired’ through the Dinner in the Dark. One also learnt the  true meaning  of teamwork and having a positive attitude by attending the Dinner.”

The team of visually impaired youth who selflessly volunteered to be part of  RDID included  Shiv, Amrinder, Navjot, Mohit, Kuljeet, Mita and  Soni.  They were assisted by volunteers including Rimpi, Falak, Sahil,  Iqbal, Ladi etc
